WPT Ultra-Light Rectenna for Harvesting Next-Generation LTE RF Energy

A novel, compact, ultralightweight multiband RF energy harvester fabricated of nested annular slots on a paper substrate to operate in all recently released LTE bands (range 0.79-0.96 GHz; 1.71-2.17 GHz; and 2.5-2.69 GHz). The design features an RF-to-dc conversion efficiency in the range of 5%-16% for an available input power of -20 dBm in all relevant bands, increasing to 11%-30% at -15 dBm.

ASSISTANCE 15 October Deadline for MTT-S Fellowships/Scholarships

The deadline for Graduate Fellowships and Spring Undergraduate Scholarships is 15 October. Graduate awards include a $6,000 scholarship and up to $1,000 to travel to IMS2018. Undergraduate awards include a $1,500 scholarship, $1,000 for travel, and a one year student membership in IEEE and MTT-S.

BIO-IMAGING Near-Field Thermoacoustic Tomography

Proof-of-concept thermoacoustic imaging of living tissues with off-the-shelf components, using only 50 W of peak power (42 mW average power) at 300 micron resolution within a modest 40-dB receiver dynamic range.

CALL FOR PAPERS Substrate Integrated Waveguides for MHz through THz

DRILLING Deep, Silent Boring into Concrete

A mechanically assisted microwave drill capable of drilling 26-cm-deep, 12-mm-diameter holes in concrete at 1 cm/min, with quiet, vibration-free operation.

MEETING Microwave Biomedical Conference to Join Microwave Week

The International Microwave Biomedical Conference (IMBioC), a forum bridging the gap between science and engineering in biomedical RF applications, will join Microwave Week June 14-15 for IMS2018 in Philadelphia.

STANDARDS Characterizing Nanoliter Dielectric Fluids

A new ”hybrid” method for on-wafer dielectric measurements of nanoliter fluid samples in a single microfluidic channel at frequencies up to 110 GHz, comparing complex relative permittivities of the channel material and the sample fluid.

POWER AMPS GHz Magnetic Inductors for Mobile

Magnetic inductors optimized to support small, high quality-factor, high-frequency power amplifiers for mobile applications, with 1-nH inductance and peak Q value ~4 at 3 GHz.

MORE POWER AMPS Harmonic Tuning and Outphasing Systems

Harmonically tuned amplifiers operating under load modulation conditions are shown to be well suited to outphasing systems, as demonstrated via a new 900-MHz outphasing system delivering 44.6 dBm with 75% PAE at saturation.
