Xiaobang Shang (M’13–SM’19) received the BEng degree (First Class) in Electronic and
Communication Engineering in 2008 and the PhD degree in Microwave Engineering in 2011
from the University of Birmingham, UK. After graduating he continued working at the
University of Birmingham as a Research Fellow.

In 2017, Xiaobang joined the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) as a Senior Scientist,
researching into electrical measurements at microwave, millimetre-wave, and terahertz
frequencies, for future telecoms and quantum applications. He was promoted to Principal
Scientist in 2023. His current research interests include microwave measurements
(particularly on-wafer measurements and material characterisations) and microwave
circuits (particularly filters).

Dr. Shang has authored or co-authored over 110 publications. He was the recipient of several
prestigious awards including the Roberto Sorrentino Prize in 2022, the IEEE Tatsuo Itoh
Award in 2017, the ARMMS Steve Evans-Pughe Prize in 2017, and the ARFTG Roger Pollard
Microwave Measurement Student Fellowship in 2009.
